Like all solar panels today, amorphous silicon solar panels (a-Si) capture the sun's energy and convert it into usable electricity. These solar panels are made of amorphous silicon on a glass, plastic, or metal substrate.

Unlike other solar panels, amorphous solar panels do not use traditional cells; instead, they are manufactured using a deposition process that involves forming an extremely thin layer of silicon on top of a substrate. The thin films are interconnected using laser-cut patterns, rather than the mechanical connections used in traditional solar panels. This structure makes amorphous panels extremely flexible and lightweight while generating electricity.

It is important to note that amorphous solar cells are primarily used to power smaller devices - solar panels using amorphous cells are not widely used commercially.

Applications of Amorphous Solar Panels
Well, their flexibility makes them attractive for a wide range of applications beyond rooftop solar. It's hard for most of us to think of the potential uses of photovoltaic technology when we haven't seen it in action yet. Some of the most common applications for amorphous solar panels will (or already have) include powering devices such as:

  • Small devices like portable speakers, solar phone chargers, and e-readers
  • Watches and clothing accessories (one of my favorite uses for solar is this hat with a built-in fan)
  • Calculators
  • Off-grid buildings or low-energy demand structures
  • Windows with a gradient of transparency


Comparison of Amorphous Solar Panels to Traditional Solar Panels
Solar panels come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but the main types are monocrystalline, multicrystalline, and thin-film (as we mentioned, amorphous solar panels are the most well-established type of thin-film photovoltaic technology).

Monocrystalline solar panels are usually offered by the best residential solar installers because they have the highest efficiency. Remember: for residential use, efficiency is the key. The average home has limited roof space, and you need to maximize every square foot to offset the home's total energy consumption. With that said, let's compare amorphous solar panels to more traditional solar panels.

Because amorphous solar panels are so flexible, they are well suited for special installations. Solar panels typically weigh around 40 pounds, and they certainly can't bend, so many solar contractors find it difficult (or dangerous) to install panels on steep, sloped, or oddly shaped surfaces.
